Table football, with a fair ranking.

We have a table football table in our office, and at some point someone wanted to know who actually plays best. So in a few days we built a small app, with AI as a tool but without AI in the app.

Anonymised data

Starting point.

There is a table football table in our office. It gets played a lot, and afterwards there is a debate: who has won how often, and who is actually the best? Nobody wrote it down.

Something else interested us too: how quickly can we get a small, clean app when we build with AI? The table football table was the ideal occasion.

How do we record games and tournaments so that everyone in the office sees the same thing and the ranking stays fair?

What we built.

A small app that you put on your phone like any other. It runs only on our office network and needs no login.

  1. Entering a result calculatedAfter the game someone taps in the goals, singles or doubles. The app sets date and time itself. If you made a typo, you delete the result again.
  2. A ranking that stays fair calculatedSomeone who was lucky twice does not go straight to the top. The ranking is calculated so that even someone who only has time for a game now and then can compete near the top. And anyone who has not played for a month drops below the line until they play again.
  3. Tournaments, and everyone sees the same calculatedFor a tournament the app draws the teams and draws the bracket. A result appears immediately on all phones in the office. If two people enter the same game at the same time, nothing is lost: the second phone simply shows the new state.
  4. Built with AI AIWe programmed with AI as a tool. Before we got started, a second model checked our plans. After a few days the app was running.

What the AI does not do.

  • There is no AI in the app. Ranking, tournament bracket and the sync between the phones follow fixed rules. Every placing can be recalculated by hand.
  • We made the rules. The AI made suggestions and helped check drafts. How the ranking is calculated and how long you may pause, we decided.

What we learned.

Fair means: explainable at the table. At first a well-known rating system, like the one from chess, seemed the obvious choice. But someone who rarely plays does not understand their number, and someone who avoids strong opponents comes out better. Now the ranking uses simpler arithmetic, and everyone understands why they stand where they stand.
The right model for each job.One model designed and built with us, a second one checked everything. We do this on purpose: a different model sees what the first one does not notice. Here it was a worked example in the ranking that did not add up. Before building, that was quickly corrected.
What helps while building does not have to stay. While building we had buttons to load sample data and to delete everything. Handy as long as nobody had entered real results. Now that people play and count in the office, they are gone.

A small app for your team?

Does something at your place run on slips of paper, in Excel or in someone's head? Tell us about it. In a short conversation we will see what a small app for it could look like. No obligation, of course.
